Over HK$10 million Has Been Granted by HKHS Award
Nurturing New Blood and Inspiring Students to “Innovate for the Future”
The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) held the 19th Hong Kong Housing Society Award (HKHS Award) presentation ceremony today (20 January). A total of 101 students from higher education institutions each received a scholarship or bursary of HK$10,000. Since its inception in 2006, the HKHS Award has benefitted more than 1,500 outstanding students with an accumulated sponsorship amount of over HK$10 million.
HKHS Chairman Walter Chan said, “Young people are the driving force of the city’s long-term development. The Housing Society attaches great importance to the development of our sustainable communities as well as the growth of the youth. By establishing the HKHS Award, we aim to nurture new blood for the housing and elderly service professions in a bid to sustain a robust pipeline for the future development of Hong Kong. We hope the awardees will continue to pursue excellence in their respective profession and carry on the spirit of the Housing Society, contributing to the sustainable development of Hong Kong.”
Renowned magician Louis Yan, an awardee in the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection in Hong Kong in 2019, attended the ceremony and gave his support to the students. Yan encouraged the students to dare to dream, never give up and embrace the spirit of change and innovation for the future when pursuing their career development, and also to fuel the community with positivity.
The HKHS Award aims to support talent development for the housing and elderly-care industries of Hong Kong, by recognising students with excellent academic performance in related disciplines, while providing financial assistance to those in need. The awardees of this year come from 11 local tertiary institutions and their schools of continuing education and community colleges, as well as three member institutions of the Vocational Training Council, namely the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education and the Hong Kong Design Institute.
In addition, HKHS has been granting the annual “Father Cronin Memorial Award” to outstanding students of The University of Hong Kong’s Master of Housing Management Programme since 1994. This year, the awardee received a scholarship of HK$10,000 in recognition of his exceptional academic performance.
To further engage the award recipients, the “HS Academy Alumni Club” (Alumni Club) was established in 2019 to provide a platform for the awardees to care, serve and give back the community together. Last year, the Alumni Club continued to organise a wide spectrum of activities ranging from the various community events of the HKHS 75th Anniversary, professional development, health and well-being, to volunteer services, in order to broaden the members’ horizons and nurture them to become a leader of tomorrow. So far, the Alumni Club has organised more than 50 activities and contributed nearly 5,000 hours of community services benefiting more than 43,000 people. Besides, the Alumni Club members are given priority for summer internship and recruitment interviews at HKHS, enabling them to unleash their talents at HKHS and embark on their journey of career development.
