HKHS Once Again Earns ESG Honours for Promoting Sustainability Creating Long-term Value with Intergenerationally Inclusive Communities

The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS), building on its long-standing mission to create sustainable living environments and promote inclusive communities, has integrated respective goals on sustainability into core businesses and daily operations in recent years, alongside with efforts to enhance related disclosure and public engagement that have raised public awareness of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).  Lately, HKHS bagged eight major industry awards in recognition of its exceptional ESG performance, including the prestigious ESG accolades from the Television Broadcast Limited (TVB) and Master Insight for the second year in a row.

HKHS Chief Executive Officer James Chan said, “We are deeply honoured that our conscientious efforts in setting key sustainability performance targets for housing development, property management, community services and daily operations have been widely recognised.  Through the adoption of smart and innovative technologies in housing development and property management, achievements have been made on energy savings and carbon emissions reduction.  We have also made it our goal to create intergenerationally inclusive communities for all ages, underscored by our commitment to enhancing residents’ well-being and creating long-term value for the sustainable development of community.”

At the TVB ESG Awards, HKHS clinched four major awards in the non-profit category, namely the “Best in ESG Practices”, the “Best in ESG Report”, the “ESG Environmental Innovative Technology Award” and the “ESG Social Innovative Technology Award”.  These accolades recognise HKHS’s various new initiatives in promoting sustainable development, including the “Whole Life Cycle Carbon Assessment” system to ensure that green elements are incorporated throughout every single stage of a project to reduce carbon emissions, from planning and design to procurement, construction, as well as property management in future.  HKHS has also leveraged advanced construction technologies such as the Smart Site Safety System, Building Information Modelling and the Digital Works Supervision System to enhance site safety, construction efficiency and quality control.

At an earlier time at the Ming Pao ESG Awards ceremony, HKHS was honoured with the “Excellent ESG Enterprise Award - Non-Listed Company (Public Housing and Real Estate)”, and the “Excellence in ESG Innovation Award” for Chung Yuet Lau, the first elderly housing project built with steel Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) in Hong Kong.  The project was recognised for its smart incorporation of numerous elderly-friendly design features to promote ageing in place, as well as an exemplar of optimising the use of housing resources.  The use of MiC also effectively shortened the duration of superstructure works and reduced the impact on nearby residents.

In addition, HKHS was recognised by the “Environmental/Green Award” and the “Social Engagement Award” in the third ESG Award organised by Master Insight and co-organised by the Research Centre for ESG at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong.

HKHS set up a cross-divisional Sustainability Working Group in 2022 and identified six relevant United Nations Sustainability Development Goals as the foundation of its sustainability blueprint.  Last year, a comprehensive sustainability framework was formulated encompassing the governance structure and strategy.  The framework consists of three strategic pillars, namely “Sustainable Homes”, “Low-carbon Transformation”, and “Future-fit Capabilities”, serving as the guiding principles for all divisions in advancing sustainability through cohesive and coordinated actions.
